Markets That Pay for Essays
By Michele L. Tune
Love to write essays, but don’t think they’re worth your time?
Well, think again!
There is a vast array of publishing opportunities for your
creative, nonfiction essays. From anthologies to magazines,
and newspapers to websites the possibilities are endless!
Mostly what constitutes my successful sales are first-person
essays. Conquering obesity, surviving domestic violence, and
paranormal experiences are a few of the topics I’ve sold.
I’m telling you, writers, essays sell!
I’ve searched the web and put in the time for you. So, kick
back, sit a spell, and brainstorm while discovering awesome
places anxious to pay for your personal experiences.
1. Plenty
Plenty is an environmental news magazine published bimonthly
and covers pretty much all things eco-friendly. If you’ve had
a “green” experience with a strong eco connection, (such as a
30-day, 100% raw food adventure or building a green home)
submit your complete manuscript (under 800 words) to The Last
Word. Guidelines:
http://www.plentymag.com/guidelines.php
Payment: $750.
2. MedHunters magazine
MedHunters publishes a variety of medical related essays.
Popular topics are “Haunted Hospitals”, “Nurse stories”, “How
to deal with death”, “Living with Diabetes or Alzheimers”, etc.
They ask that your story be touching, funny, or memorable. Study
archives:

Submit to:
submissions@medhunters.com . Pays $75 and up.
3. Newsweek
My Turn allows readers to contribute an essay and have “your
turn” speaking your mind and sharing your opinion about life
issues. Write on any topic, just not as a response to a
previously published essay. Follow the guidelines
http://www.newsweek.com/id/43767
. Pays in the vicinity of $1,000.
4. Underwired
Always on the lookout for new contributors, this magazine buys
one-time rights for your essay (800 - 1,200 words). Each issue
has a theme, due the 15th of every month. December’s theme is
“lists.” Editorial calendar:http://uwmag.com/content/view/35/39/
.
Payment $100.
5. PURE INSPIRATION magazine
Had an encounter with an angel or moment of epiphany? Share your
inspirational story to encourage readers. Don’t lean to any one
religion as this publication strives to practice tolerance, not
intolerance. Guidelines:
http://pureinspirationmag.com/information/guidelines.shtml
and submit your essay. Payment: $100, upon publication.
6. This I Believe, Inc.
Based on the 1950’s program This I Believe, in which multitudes
gathered round their radios with awe to hear essays by Helen
Keller, Harry Truman, and many more. Jay Allison and Dan Gediman
united in hopes that in sharing one’s story, others will come to
respect a view different than their own. In 300 - 500 words,
share the essence of your day-to-day philosophy and shaping of
your beliefs. Guidelines:

Pays: $200.
7. Stitches for Patients
Canadian “Health and Humour” magazine seeks 800-1,200 words. If
you’ve experienced a hilarious doctor’s visit, or perhaps a medical
procedure where things went ironically awry, this is a great
opportunity to have your funny essay published. Guidelines:
http://www.stitchesforpatients.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=32
.
Offers CN$0.40/word for first serial rights, payable on
publication.
8. Life in the USA
Contest will end either June 30, 2008 or on the publication of
100 new articles, whichever comes later. Seeking essays regarding
details about American life such as school violence, reality TV,
or American folklore. More information here:
http://www.lifeintheusa.com/contest.htm . Pays winner: $1,000.
9. WAHMmagazine
As a complete on-line virtual magazine for work-at-home parents.
Stories from the Trenches section seeks creative non-fiction
(801-1,000 words) relating to your experience as a work-at-home
parent. Topics are open. Guidelines:
http://www.thewahmmagazine.com/Submission_Guidelines.html .
Pays $150.
Did you know the first author to describe his works as essays
was the Frenchman, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592)? A whole
myriad of writers have since written and published essays.
