FFWSmall Markets

When we started the FundsforWriters newsletter, we saw too many markets under $350 and 20 cents/word that we couldn’t use – but were great opportunities. FFW Small Markets is sweet and simple. EDITOR’S PIECE OF MIND
===================================================

THE ONE BOOK

Forget the books you want to write. Think only of the book
you are writing. ~Henry Miller

I have four books on my agenda right now. That’s enough
to keep me awake at night. In fact, it did. For two hours
last night I tossed and turned, wondering how to schedule my
writing life.

I thought of scaling back FundsforWriters (blasphemy, I know).

I thought of writing around the clock, stopping only to sleep,
then looked outside the next morning and saw my garden and a
gorgeous, almost-fall day.

I thought of writing in the day on one and the night on
another.

Then I remembered Henry Miller’s quote. It was one I’d just
posted on Facebook not a week ago. It had been stuck in my
head as a great lesson, and I’d given advice to others about
that very topic.

But I wasn’t practicing what I was preaching . . . or what
Henry Miller was preaching.

Granted, Henry Miller didn’t have to do social networking or
fight as hard to make sales. Writers were more revered and
less common in his day. Not to mention he was downright superb.

But he was right. You do a project a disservice by spreading
it thin. Best to prioritize, select the most important one,
and focus.

So while I’d love to get the nonfiction book out by Christmas,
and I’d love to have the new series outlined by then as well,
my goal is to finish book three. It will be the reason I rise
in the morning, and I’ll fall into  bed thinking of it at
night.

When we dabble in everything and finish nothing, what have
we accomplished? Our legacy only consists of spits and sputters
instead of one book at a time. In the long run we’ll complete
more if we focus in one direction, on that one project.

This world is very fast paced and demanding of our time. It’s
time we took it by the ears and shook it, saying we’ll decide
what we do and when we do it. Then we pick up our pen, pick
a project, and decide it’s what defines us. Then when it is
done, we dare think of something else, and give it the attention
it needs.

That’s how we eat up ground. That’s how we make strides.
That’s how we become better writers . . . by writing one
great story at a time.

====
PS:
I did make a decision to scale back a teeny bit, though.
I’ve decided to select the best smaller markets, those that
still pay pretty darn well, and insert them into FundsforWriters,
removing the need for FFW Small Markets. No more tiny markets.
Just solid ones that can make a difference in your writing career.

Most of you already belong to FundsforWriters, but in case you
don’t, head on over to FundsforWriters.com and sign up! It’s free.

And while we’re addressing change, take a peek at the new
FundsforWriters.com website! Isn’t it pretty?

A QUOTE FROM LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE!

The Carolina Slade Mystery Series is available with its
premier book Lowcountry Bribe. Welcome to the world of
Carolina Slade. Here’s a blurb:

“Wayne produced a body wire and demonstrated how it worked, but
I paid little attention to the words. I’d have to unbutton my
shirt. I’d worn my imagination thin on how to play this, conjuring
ideas to diffuse any erotic imaginings, but shedding my top now
raised the heat of embarrassment.”

story based on length (i.e., $0.0075 per word). Royalties on
individual e-book releases will be 50% of cover price on
direct sales through Storm Moon Press’ e-store, and 40% of
cover price minus distribution costs for sales through third
party vendors. All royalties will be paid quarterly.
Contributors will also be given 2 print copies of the

=====

PUGALICIOUS PRESS
http://www.pugaliciouspress.com/submissions/

Pugalicious Press is a green company. We are now accepting
e-mail submissions for middle grade and young adult books
and graphic novels for these age groups. Our main focus is
on fantasy, high adventure, historical fiction, and (a very
small number of) dystopian (but only if it has a fantastical
element). If your book has a unique protagonist, unique
world, or unique twist, we welcome your query.

=====

GREY MATTER PRESS
http://greymatterpress.com/splatterlands-anthology-submissions/

For our upcoming anthology Splatterlands, we are looking
for the loudest voices working in the genre of Splatterpunk
fiction today. If you consider your work to be “hyperintensive
horror without limitation,” then Splatterlands may be for
you. If you were weaned on fiction from the masters of Splatter,
such as Clive Barker, Joe Lansdale, Poppy Z. Brite, Robert
McCammon and more, we definitely want to hear from you.
Word Count 3,000 – 10,000 words. Deadline December 21, 2012.
Flat fee of $100 for each accepted manuscript.

=====

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF NURSING
http://www.editorialmanager.com/ajn/

AJN does not have a limit on page length for feature articles;
however, papers over 20 pages in length (14,000 words) are
discouraged. Do not cut the details of a paper or reduce font
size in order to get the manuscript to under 20 pages. We
prefer to advise authors on reducing length after their papers
are peer reviewed. Columns are shorter, more tightly focused
and generally run 1,500 – 2,500 words. Submissions for Reflections
and Viewpoint should be no more than 850 words.

AJN welcomes submissions of evidence-based clinical application
papers and descriptions of best clinical practices, original
research reports, case studies, narratives, commentaries, and
other manuscripts on a variety of clinical and professional
topics. The journal also welcomes submissions for its various
departments and columns, including artwork and poetry that is
relevant to nursing or health care. Pays $100 honorarium.
