Growing Market: Green Writers- Green Topics
By Wenona Napolitano

Green is the hottest trend right now. Everywhere you
look you see advice and topics on how to go green, how
to be green, what you can do to be green. You can’t
open a magazine or newspaper, or turn on the
television without some green/eco-friendly topic
jumping out at you. Writers have the opportunity to
cash in on this green trend.

So you may be thinking you aren’t very green, at least
not that you know of. Do you have to walk the walk to
talk the talk? Yes and no. Many eco-writers are
actively green but you may be green and not even know it.

Do you ride your bike to work three days a week
instead of driving? Do you carpool? Do you rooftop
garden? Do you recycle? There are many things that can
make you green. Buying organic food, shopping at your
local farmer’s market. Crafting with found objects,
turning garbage into art. Given the right slant and
focus it’s all very green.

Many of the publications publish personal essays about
a person’s experience in going green. Topics could
include my first green vacation, trying to recycle,
eating a raw food diet, or going vegetarian.

Go for the green ($) while being green. Here are some
green markets, remember to always read and follow the
guidelines and read samples of what they’ve already
published:

One of the biggest “green” publications is Plenty
Magazine. They have both print and online versions and
feature a variety of green focused topics from
lifestyle to food and travel. The pay for print
publication is up to $1 a word, online only
publication is $150 per story. Detailed writers’
guidelines are available on their website
www.plentymag.com.

The Sierra Club’s bimonthly publication is Sierra
Magazine. They are looking for “strong,
well-researched, literate writing on significant
environmental and conservation issues.” Sierra pays
around $1 a word and pays on acceptance. Get details
and examples of what they publish at
www.sierraclub.org.

E: The Environmental Magazine is another publication
focused on green topics. Articles are paid around $.30
a word. Full guidelines are available online at
www.emagazine.com .

Mother Earth News is a bimonthly magazine that
promotes “self sufficient, financially independent,
and environmentally aware lifestyles”. Payments range
from $25 to $150 a piece depending on experience and
content. Detailed guidelines can be found at
www.motherearthnews.com

Natural Home Magazine’s motto is “living wisely, living
well”. Their readers are “eco-savvy homeowners…that
care deeply about healthy living, natural products,
and a sustainable economy.” Their guidelines are very
detailed and strict (and hard to find on the site), and
they can be found at this web address after much
searching:
http://www.naturalhomemagazine.com/contribute/guidelines.aspx .

Indiana Living Green: A Hoosier’s Guide to a
Sustainable Lifestyle is a small publication put out
six times a year in Indianapolis. Pay rates start
around $75 for articles and are negotiable. See
complete writer guidelines online at
www.indianalivinggreen.com .

These are just a few of the green publications that
are out there. More are popping up everyday both
online and in print as well as the many mainstream
publications that are adding green content, green
columns and eco-friendly sections to their newspapers
and magazines. If you have an interesting green slant
that will fit into the needs of a traditional magazine
pitch it to regular publications. Also check your
local newspapers and other local publications to see
if they have started or are interested in featuring
some eco-friendly content.

So go ahead, get out there and go green.
